Music Midtown 2017

I spent the weekend of September 16th and 17th standing within crowds that totaled 78,000 at Music Midtown. This was my second year attending the festival, and it was just as great as my first! I was completely awestruck the first time I saw the lineup over the summer and I’m so blessed to have been able to attend. This year I went with my friends Scout (who came with my family last year) and Patty as well as Scout’s mom. I decided not to attempt bringing in my Canon camera again because it was such a struggle to get through security with it last year so unfortunately I didn’t make a montage video. However, I’ve included a ton of videos I took of the performers on my phone, so hopefully you’ll forgive me! I’m so excited to share a little about this fun weekend with y’all, enjoy!

Saturday

10:00 a.m. – I drove over to Scout’s house where we all (Scout, Patty, Scout’s mom, and I) packed and piled into her mother’s car and left for Atlanta.

12:30: p.m. – Finally, after a fun ride of singing songs we would soon hear live, we arrived in Atlanta. We checked into our hotel, the Atlanta Marriott Suites Midtown, which was an amazing place to stay, then quickly changed into our outfits for the festival.

1:00 p.m. – We walked from the hotel to Which Wich? for lunch. After we finished eating, we walked around a few furniture stores in the area for a couple hours or so with Scout’s mom since the first set we wanted to see wasn’t until 4:30 p.m. Once she’d finished shopping we walked back to the hotel to make sure we had everything we’d need for Music Midtown. When we were sure we were ready, we got in the car and rode to Piedmont Park.

3:00 p.m. – After much anticipation, we made it to Music Midtown. Security seemed surprisingly less taxing this year, so it only took a few minutes to actually get in. Immediately after getting in, we found a water fountain to fill up our reusable water bottles (you’re allowed to bring in one factory-sealed bottle full of water or one reusable bottle that holds equal or less than a liter) then hit the merchandise stands because by the time we got to the merchandise stands Saturday night last year everything we wanted had already sold out. I bought a super soft light blue tee with the Music Midtown lineup and logo on it and found a way to stuff it into the small crossbody bag I brought in.

4:30 p.m. – AJR’s set began at the Cotton Club Stage and the band was so fun to see live, they’re all great performers! You might recognize this name from their hits “Weak” and “I’m Not Famous” – they’ve finally been getting some recognition lately and I have a feeling they won’t be going away anytime soon. They opened with “I’m Not Famous” but my favorite song in the set was definitely “Drama.”

5:30 p.m. – Tove Lo came out on time and was such a hoot. I’d technically seen her another time as Taylor Swift’s guest in Atlanta on the 1989 World Tour (read my post about that concert here), but she’s way different when she’s not performing for a Taylor Swift audience. Regardless of the age rating that should be on her set, she’s crazy talented. I’d been dying to hear her sing “Say It” by Flume since I found out I was going to Music Midtown and aside from the absence of the iconic DJ’s base drops, it fulfilled my expectations. After her set ended, we stayed in the crowd and slowly moved towards the front, eventually scoring third row for Big Sean.

7:30 p.m. – I had been so excited to see Big Sean and he definitely didn’t disappoint. He’s so humble and grateful for how far he’s come. My favorite moments in his set were his moment of silence and prayer for all the victims of recent tragedies and hearing “Beware,” “Bounce Back,” “Blessings,” and “I Know.”

8:45 p.m. – We had planned on staying at the Salesforce Stage to wait out a good spot for Bruno Mars, but then we realized we had all run out of water and still hadn’t eaten dinner. We ended up leaving the crowd to eat dinner and refill our water bottles. The food truck lines were crazy long so I actually ended up buying a Minute Made soft frozen strawberry lemonade for dinner (so healthy right?). As we were walking back to the Salesforce Stage we briefly stopped to listen to Wiz Khalifa.

9:30 p.m. – The moment we’d been waiting for, Bruno Mars’ set, had finally come. Hearing his hits, new and old, like “Treasure,” “That’s What I Like,” “24K Magic,” “Uptown Funk,” “Marry You,” and so many more was surreal. My favorite song had to be “Versace On The Floor” but he’s such an incredible dancer and overall performer I even loved his songs I didn’t know. He sounds exactly like he does on his records, I’m so lucky I had the chance to hear him live!

10:30 p.m. – After Bruno Mars’ set we headed back to the hotel to shower and rest up for another exciting day at the festival.

Sunday

11:00 a.m. – We slept in a lot then threw on some comfortable clothes to go to brunch in. We went to the West Egg Cafe and it was awesome. I got this incredible banana bread French toast and it lasted me through lunch. After breakfast we went back to the hotel room to finish getting ready for the day (glitter and all) and pack our stuff. On the way to the festival we picked up another friend of ours, Anna, who was staying with some family friends in Atlanta.

2:00 p.m. – We got to Music Midtown over an hour before any of the artists we wanted to see were performing so I could get in line to meet Zara Larsson (but we stopped on the way to the Honda x Waterloo Records Artist Signing Stage to take a few pictures!). I’ve been listening to Zara Larsson since I was in eighth grade and I was ecstatic when I saw they put her name on the meet and greet list. I purchased a physical copy of her album to have her sign then waited in line for over an hour but was so lucky to meet her! She’s so sweet and absolutely gorgeous in person (we aren’t smiling at the camera in the picture because security said they wouldn’t have time for everyone to meet her if we did posed pictures).

3:30 p.m. – Once we left the meet and greet we saw Judah and the Lion at the Honda Stage. I absolutely love their songs “Take It All Back” and “Suit and Jacket” and they sounded just as good live. The band members love to dance and get the crowd involved so it was a really fun set!

4:30 p.m. – We walked over to the Roxy Stage to go see Zara Larsson perform. She was wearing the coolest dress and looked just as pretty as when I met her earlier. I didn’t realize she was such a good dancer, but she had a ton of choreography, so much that she actually ran backstage and got sick in the heat. She handled her queasiness like a champ and finished her set in a more stationary position. My favorite songs from the set were “TG4M,” “Symphony,” and “So Good.”

5:30 p.m. – As we were walking to the water station we heard Lizzo’s set starting at the Cotton Club Stage and decided to stop and listen for a while. Lizzo has quite the personality and despite not really knowing who she was we had a fun time watching her.

5:45 p.m. – After about fifteen minutes of Lizzo we decided to grab some pizza for dinner. The pizza at Music Midtown is overpriced (like all of the food there), but actually comes in pretty large slices, so I’d say it’s the best food option there. Once we finished our food we returned to the Cotton Club Stage in anticipation of Russ’ set.

7:30 p.m. – When Russ finally came out the crowd went crazy. My favorite songs from the set were “Do It Myself,” “What They Want,” and “Psycho Pt. 2.” We left Russ’ set twenty minutes early to start finding a spot in the Future crowd and I’m really glad we did, about ten minutes after we got to the Roxy Stage a huge crowd came in.

8:40 p.m. – Future, being one of the biggest names in rap music right now, was such a neat experience and a fun “I can say I…”. I hate to admit this but I haven’t actually listened to a lot of Future’s music so I enjoyed his more popular songs “Jumpman,” “Mask Off,” and “Low Life.” He actually brought out Young Thug (who I also don’t listen to oops) for a rendition of “Pick Up the Phone.”

(I’m sorry the “Jumpman” video is sideways… I’m still really not sure why that happened.)

9:30 p.m. – We left before the end of Future’s set to avoid the traffic getting out and get home a little earlier since we were going to school the next day.

Memories…Do Not Open Tour

If you’ve read a single one of my playlist posts, you know I love The Chainsmokers. I started listening to them back in 2014, and I’ve kept up with them ever since. In the first week of April, they released their first complete album, Memories…Do Not Open. Needless to say, I stayed up until midnight to hear it upon release and I’m absolutely obsessed with it. Last weekend, my friend Scout and I went to see them in Charleston on their Memories…Do Not Open tour and it was a show for the books. I seriously had the best experience and today I’m thrilled to be recapping the concert for y’all! I just want to let you know that the quality of my pictures and videos will not be as good quality as usual due to the fact that cameras were not allowed in the concert, so everything was taken on my iPhone 7. Also, I recommend watching all the videos in HD, which you can do by clicking the “HD” button which is in the bottom right corner of the video next to the full screen button. Enjoy!

10:00 a.m. – Scout’s mother, Scout, and her sister picked me up and we left for Charleston. The trip was about three hours long and was filled with great naps and lots of music.

2:50 p.m. – Although doors weren’t supposed to open until 7:00PM and the concert didn’t start until 8:00PM, Scout and I got to the venue (North Charleston Coliseum) early because we purchased VIP soundcheck tickets. These tickets gave us a VIP tag on a lanyard, an autographed poster, exclusive merchandise (a black beanie that said “MEMORIES” on the front and had The Chainsmokers’ logo on the other side), and of course access to The Chainsmokers’ soundcheck. The check-in time for VIP was between 3:30PM and 4:30PM, but we knew we wanted to be among the first there. While we waited to be let into the coliseum, we made small talk with other fans.

4:20 p.m. – Finally, a few security people came out and began to check our bags, tickets, and IDs before letting us into the coliseum. This is when they gave us our VIP stuff mentioned above. Once we were all checked in, we waited in the hall surrounding the arena to be let into soundcheck. They were running behind schedule and it was a long time before they finally let us in, so Scout and I became friends with the three girls in front of us in line. By the time we were finally allowed into the arena for soundcheck, you would’ve thought we all came together.

6:20ish p.m. – The security team let us into the arena and all of the VIP people formed two rows in front of the barricade. Drew and Alex (AKA The Chainsmokers, if you didn’t know their names) greeted us from the stage and then played “Young” and “Bloodstream.” Scout and I brought in three posters that we made before the show, one saying “we love Drew” (with a heart in place of the word “love” and little red lights inside the heart), another saying “The Chainsmokers are ALL WE KNOW” in reference to their song, “All We Know,” and the last, larger one saying “Cheddar made us do it #round4” in reference to Alex’s dog, Cheddar, who has her own Instagram (linked here because she’s too cute and you need to check her out) and the fact that it was Scout’s fourth time seeing The Chainsmokers and my second. Drew and Alex each commented on our posters from the stage, I specifically recall Drew saying “that Cheddar poster is everything” and asking if we made him a poster too (that’s when we held up the “we love Drew” poster). After soundcheck, we were directed to a lobby-type area and were told we would be allowed back into the arena and have access to the merchandise table five minutes before the rest of general admission. While five minutes might not seem like a lot, Scout and I knew that’s really the difference between the front of the floor and the back, so we were excited and formulated a plan; Scout gave me her money for a tee shirt (they were $35-$40 each, in case you were wondering if you’re going to one of The Chainsmokers’ other tour dates) and upon being allowed into the arena I would buy both of our tee shirts and she would take up as much room as possible as close to the center of the front row as possible.

7:11 p.m. – Although the whole VIP program ran a little behind schedule, they kept their promise and let us in five minutes before they opened the doors for the rest of general admission. Scout booked it to the front of the arena and I bought tee shirts as fast as I could. When I met back up with Scout, I found her just a few feet off the center of the front row next to the girls we had just become friends with. Scout and I were overwhelmingly excited, I still can’t believe we managed to get in the front row. After the security staff came around and taped the barricade where each piece connected, we tore off tiny pieces of the tape and taped two of our posters onto the barricade. We were half expecting someone to get mad at us for having posters and taping them, but the only guy who said anything to us just told us it was cool. I’m pretty sure the only reason we were able to get in with posters was because we came in for soundcheck and while the venue prohibited posters, they were allowed for soundcheck and they never had us go through any kind of security between soundcheck and our actual entry. We kept the big Cheddar poster rolled up because it took up too much room to fit on the barricade, plus we wanted Drew and Alex to recognize us when we held it up again. After taping our posters, we talked about what we were most excited for while we waited for the openers.

8:10ish p.m. – The first opener, k?d (pronounced “kid”) came out. k?d is an upcoming DJ and was a great start to the night. He had some great mixes and I had listened to him briefly before the concert, so I knew a couple of his original songs (my favorite is “Discover” featuring RKCB, you should totally check it out).

9:00 p.m. – I was so excited about the second opener, Kiiara (you might recognize her as the girl that sings “Gold” and “Heavy” with Linkin Park) and she did not disappoint. I’ve been listening to her music for about a year now and seeing her live just made me love her even more. She sang every song she has, my favorites being “Hang up tha phone” and “Feels.” Also, I think it’s worth mentioning that when she moved to the area of the stage directly in front of me during “Hang up tha phone” she waved at me (I know, I’m a total fangirl but it was so cool for me)!

9:52 p.m. – The Chainsmokers started the show with a funny little skit in which Drew is alone, pacing on the stage and “texting” Alex (the texts are projected on the screen behind Drew) asking where he is because the show is starting. After the skit, Drew returned to backstage and soon after the duo rose to the stage and opened with “The One.” Like I said before, the concert was a great experience. I was unsure how their concert would be in comparison to their concert I attended last April at Wake Forest, before Drew started singing and before they released an album that seems a lot less like EDM than their previous singles, but it was better than anything I had imagined. We saw them front row and their whole production was insane. Their special effects included many cool set features (like floating platforms and a temporary staircase), fire, confetti, and steam. They had an EDM set, but Drew also sang a lot. My favorite songs were “Break Up Every Night,” “Young,” “Honest,” “All We Know,” “My Type,” and “Roses” (I know, a lot of favorites, but it’s so hard to choose)! Emily Warren, who cowrites a ton of their songs and is featured in three of their songs, toured with them, so she sang her parts in all of the songs she’s featured in and filled in for many of the female parts. In one of the last songs, Drew came off the stage and walked through the area between the stage and barricade, high-fiving the front row on the way over and on the way back to the stage (including me)! Drew also waved to Scout and I a few times throughout the show (I even managed to get one time on video, watch to the end of my clip of “Roses” to see)! Throughout the concert I obviously took a ton of pictures and videos, so I’ve included some below. They closed with “Last Day Alive” and a ton of confetti, the perfect ending to an incredible performance.

11:40 p.m. – Once the concert ended, Scout and I bolted out of the coliseum to wait by their buses in hopes of meeting Drew and Alex since we saw on Twitter and Instagram that they had met fans by their tour buses after the two previous shows. While we were there, we met their new drummer, Matt McGuire! As we waited in anticipation of Drew and Alex coming out, Scout and I talked about how great the opening act, Kiiara, was and how happy we were to hear her live. A man behind us overheard us and began to make smalltalk with us about her. Finally, he told us that he was her tour manager and asked if we wanted to meet her… of course we said yes! He pulled out his phone and called her, then about ten minutes later she came off of her bus and we got to meet her! We waited for Drew and Alex for a little longer before finally calling it quits and walking back over to our hotel (which was basically connected to the coliseum).

Okay, so this next part didn’t technically happen at the concert, but it’s definitely worth mentioning. At the very beginning of The Chainsmokers’ set, I unrolled our “Cheddar made us do it” poster and held it up. A photographer in the photo pit took a picture of Scout and I with it. Scout and I, being the crazy fans that we are, already knew the majority of The Chainsmokers’ photographers and didn’t recognize this guy, so I assumed it was for some Charleston newspaper article or something and didn’t think much of it. Sunday morning, on the drive back, I began to look online for the picture but was unable to find any articles on The Chainsmokers’ concert in Charleston. I gave up and pretty much forgot about it. Around noon, I was watching The Chainsmokers’ Instagram story and was shocked to find the picture of Scout and I with the Cheddar poster on their story! There was also a picture of the crowd with Scout and I at the front center which I didn’t even notice until Scout told me (because I was still so excited about the other photo!). In case you don’t believe me, I’ve included the full screenshot of one of the pictures on their story plus the cropped version of both pictures.

Music Midtown 2016

If you’ve read any of my concert posts, you’ve probably figured out that I love live music. Over the summer, I came across the Music Midtown 2016 lineup and absolutely fell in love with it. Everything about it seemed perfect; it was on a Saturday and Sunday this year (which meant that I didn’t have to miss any school), Atlanta is only a two hour drive from my mom’s house, the tickets were very reasonably priced, and the lineup was honestly irresistible. After a ton of begging and working around the house to raise the money, I convinced my mom to take me, my little sister, and my friend, Scout, to Music Midtown.

We attended Music Midtown the weekend of September 17th and 18th. This was my first music festival and overall I had a phenomenal experience, despite the storm (and evacuation) on Sunday. If you live anywhere near Atlanta, you should definitely look into Music Midtown next year. There are very few music festivals in the southeastern United States and Music Midtown did not disappoint! There were a variety food venders (I have to say I was impressed by the humongous and delicious pizza slice I had on Sunday), an artist signing shack (that’s where I met Daya), and aside from the rain delay/evacuation Sunday afternoon most of the performance times ran according to schedule. I realize there’s no way for me to possibly sum the festival up by writing about it the way I usually write about concerts, so I decided to make a video instead. I haven’t made a video like this for you all before, so I’d love it if you’d leave me some feedback in the comments if you like it! Delirium World Tour

If you know me personally (or have just been reading my posts for a while) you know that I have a love for music, so attending concerts is one of my favorite things to do. A couple nights ago, June 9th, I went to see Ellie Goulding in Charlotte with my stepmother and Mattie, one of my close Ellie Goulding-loving friends, as a birthday party/gift from my parents (my actual birthday is June 12th.) I had an incredible time, so today I’m sharing the experience with you through pictures, stories, and videos of Ellie’s performance (featuring my screaming.) Enjoy!

4:30 – We arrived in Charlotte, with half an hour to kill before The Melting Pot opened for dinner. We ventured into a consignment store nearby that had some really cute pieces and incredible deals – I found a large brown leather Tory Burch bag for just $90! At 5:00 we left the consignment store and went into The Melting Pot, my absolute favorite restaurant, for dinner. We had a cheese course with mozzarella, pizza sauce, basil, and garlic that was a special and the Flaming Turtle chocolate course, which had dark chocolate, candied pecans, and caramel.

6:45ish – We arrived at the Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheater. After parking and going through security, we went to the lawn and found a spot with a good view to spread our blankets and hang out before the concert began. Once we were settled, Mattie and I found the bathrooms and bought a concert tee and some water. We explored the amphitheater a bit and found that we could stand by the gate to the concession area to get a better view without getting in trouble. We stayed in that spot until the end of the opening act. Matt and Kim opened for Ellie and they were awesome! I have to admit, I only know a few of their songs, but they were hilarious and they put on a great show.

8:15 – Matt and Kim left the show and the intermission before Ellie’s performance began. At this time, a few drunk ladies got in front of us by the gate. It was then that Mattie and I realized that we’d rather be a little further from the stage than experience the concert with a stranger’s hair in our faces. We walked along the lawn searching for a nice place to view the stage, and low and behold, there was just enough room for two people to stand at the almost exact center of the very front of the lawn. We quickly took this spot and I am so glad we took that chance leaving the gate! The sun was setting, the weather was perfect, and our view was great (see below, no zoom)!

8:52 – Ellie Goulding rose to the stage, the crowd went wild. Ellie is even better live than she is on record. This concert was absolutely phenomenal, I had the best time. My favorite moment was when she sang “Lost and Found” (one of her more underrated songs from the Delirium album) acoustically. Towards the end, Ellie left the stage, and the whole crowd was screaming for an encore. Ellie returned with a colorful, sparkly jacket and sang “Anything Could Happen” and “Love Me Like You Do.” I’ve inserted quite a few videos below (I filmed them on Snapchat, so they’re short and grainy), please excuse our screaming/screeching and try to enjoy Ellie as much as I did!

10:36 – After the encore, the concert ended with gold confetti and bright green spotlights. Mattie and I salvaged some confetti to take home and took one last picture before leaving the amphitheater.

The concert was such a great experience, if Ellie is coming to a city near you, you should go! It’s worth every penny and going with a friend is an absolute blast. Also, if you haven’t listened to the Delirium album yet, you should definitely give it a listen! Delirium is one of my favorite albums ever and hearing it live just makes me love it that much more.

1989 World Tour

As you probably already know if you follow me on Instagram, a few weeks ago I got the chance to go see one of my favorite people, Taylor Swift, live in Atlanta. I’ve been listening to Taylor since I was around five years old and she has gotten me through more than anyone would ever understand. 1989 is by far my favorite album she has ever released, and when my mom told me she bought tickets to the concert back in November of last year, I was ecstatic. After the long wait, 1989 was everything I had hoped for and more, and I’m so excited that I finally have the time to tell you all about it today!

11:00ish – My family doesn’t live in Atlanta, so we made the drive down that morning. Needless to say, the ride there was one long jam session with my mom and little sister.

2:00 – We finally arrived in Atlanta then got settled into our hotel room and got dressed for the concert. Weeks ahead of time, we purchased some plain white tee shirts that I then painted with lyrics from Taylor’s song, “Style.” I wore my tee with a cobalt paper bag skirt from J.Crew and white converse, my little sister picked out a pair of white polka-dotted black pixie jeans and some metallic flats, and my mom paired hers with red jeans and brown flats. Once we had our outfits assembled, we accessorized with some of our favorite Bourbon and Boweties bangles and I wrote Taylor Swift lyrics down each of our arms in Sharpie. We then packed our purses and checked the light on our signs. Finally, after almost a full year of anticipation, we were about to see Taylor Swift for the third time.

5:00 – We got to the show a couple hours early so we would have time to get in, go to the different booths around the arena, go to the bathroom, buy tee shirts, and find our seats without worrying about time before the show began. When we got to our seats, we found little plastic and rubber bracelets taped to our seats. Later in the night, directions on how to use the bracelets flashed onto the jumbotrons; we had to pull out a small slip of plastic to activate them, then they flashed in different colors throughout the show to the beat of the songs. Our seats were a couple rows above the floor, and we had a great view!

7:00 – Shawn Mendes walked onstage as the first opening act. He sang all of our favorites like “Stitches,” “Life Of The Party,” and “Something Big,” as well as a few covers (including “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White T’s, the main reason I almost lost my voice before Taylor even came out.) After Shawn finished, Vance Joy came out. He sang “Riptide,” “Mess Is Mine,” and many more that the whole stadium knew by heart. When Vance walked off, there was an intermission before Taylor came on that lasted about twenty minutes. The jumbotrons played through some Taylor trivia and behind the scenes clips from her music videos as the crowd of over 50,000 waited the final minutes of our eleven month wait.

9:00 – Finally, the lights grew dark again, the crowd’s bracelets began to glow, and the loud, techno beats of “Welcome To New York” began to play. When I saw Taylor walk on the stage, I almost started crying. This was my family’s third time seeing Taylor in concert, and the feeling of excitement that takes place throughout the concert never goes away. I’ve never screamed so loudly or danced so freely in front of strangers. Once again, I inserted clips below, but be warned, my singing/screaming is really loud and it’s not the prettiest sound. So feel free to say “ew, I can’t stand the sound of Faith’s cracking voice another second,” or look past my voice and listen to Taylor, or do what my friends did and watch them repetitively and make fun of my voice, whatever works for you.

Taylor closed with “Shake It Off,” and after the show my family went back to our hotel. It was without a doubt one of the best nights of my life. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about my time with Taylor!
